Current Gallery: egrets ( piece)
A tall and stately bird, the Great Egret slowly stalks shallow wetlands looking for small fish to spear with its long sharp bill. The Snowy Egret is much smaller with yellow feet and a black bill v's the Great Egret's black feet and yellow bill. The Great Egret nests in colonies of up to 100 birds. Now protected, they were almost hunted to extinction in the 1800's and early 1900's for their long white plumage. The plumes are grown near the tail during breeding season.
